Volleyball Challenge turns 10

Approximately 200 players from bars, restaurants and hotels around Whistler will take part in the 10 th annual Whistler Resort Volleyball Challenge July 19-20. This event, which is open to the local service industry, takes place on the Myrtle Philip Community Centre fields, with after parties at Joey Chan’s Chinese Eatery and Crabshack/Tex Corleone’s.

Bike Park hosts Women’s Wednesday series

In an effort to get more women into the Whistler Mountain Bike Park, Whistler-Blackcomb is launching a Wednesday ladies’ night starting on July 20, from 5 to 8 p.m. in the evening. There will be discounts on lift tickets and bike rentals, as well as free guides for women of all ability levels.

"We want to see more women in the bike park, it’s that simple," said Jeremy Roche, Whistler-Blackcomb’s manager of business development. "Women’s Wednesdays are geared towards women of all riding abilities. It’s a great way to check out the park and get the help of an experienced guide."

After the ride there will be an après at the GLC. There are several ways to take part. If you don’t have a bike fitting for the park, you can get an Extended Play ticket, rental bike and protective gear for just $49, which is a savings of $90. If you do have a bike, an Extended Play ticket is just $19.

The guides are provided free of charge, and all participants will receive a $10 food voucher for the GLC.

Passes are available at the ticket booth, and groups will be paired up with guides at the base of the mountain.

Hash Runs return

The monthly hash run, sponsored by Escape Route and Whistler Running Experience, is set for Tuesday, July 26. To take part, meet at Escape Route at 6 p.m. with a $5 entry fee. No hash run experience is needed, just a set of running shoes and a sense of fun.

The hash run is basically a group run, with participants following a set of markings on local trails. When the field gets to a certain kind of marking the lead runners take off in several directions looking for the next marker, which gives the slower runners a chance to catch up with the group. Once the mark is discovered the runner yells "On, On", and the group follows the trail to the next marker.

There will be food and beverages for all participants, including some refreshments on course and an after-party in an undisclosed location.
