The inaugural Trialsworx mountain bike trials competition took place on Saturday as part of the Crankworx festival, with a few surprises for spectators and organizers.
One of the surprises was the appearance of Hans Rey, a pioneer of the sport, who competed for the first time in eight years. Another surprise was the performance of 14-year-old Steve Baia, who won the Expert Category.
The youth competition was also impressive with 21 kids trying trials riding for the first time, all receiving medals for their efforts.
Competitors made several laps of two courses, one in the village and one across Fitzsimmons Creek.
John Webster from Mill Bay, B.C., the winner of the Test of Metal Trials, dominated once again at Trialsworx with a low score of seven and seven cleans. Dave Herr was second with a score of 28 and four cleans, while Jeff Anderson was third with a score of 30 and four cleans.
Steve Baia won the expert category with a score of 22 and five cleans to finish first, just ahead of Hans Rey, who finished with a score of 23 and four cleans. Jeff Soucek was third with a 32 and three cleans.
The sport category went to A.J. McFarlane with a score of 14 and six cleans, followed by Harley Carbery with 16 and six and Graham Fulton with 20 and four.
The novice category went to Jordan Eichorn with a 17 and six, followed by Jake Wile with an 18 and eight and Jordan Ellignson with a 36 and two.
There was a strong turnout overall with 42 riders in the field, not including the 21 kids.
