Whistler running team tops STORMY

Seventy-eight solo racers and 11 relay teams of three started the fourth annual Squamish Test of Running Metal

Seventy-eight solo racers and 11 relay teams of three started the fourth annual Squamish Test of Running Metal-Yeah! ultra trail running race on Saturday, Aug. 13, enduring temperatures over 30 degrees Celsius as they attempted a 64 km course that follows most of the Test of Metal Route.

All of the relay teams made the finish, but 11 solo competitors did not finish the run.

This year the top runner was a woman, as marathon runner Lisa Polizzi of Brisbane, Australia showed just how hot it gets Down Under with a time of five hours, nine minutes and 43 seconds. This was the first race over 42 km for Polizzi, although it wasn’t her first trail run – Polizzi also won the women’s category in the 25 km Comfortably Numb in Whistler on June 26.

Second across the line on Saturday was Rob Fontaine of Campbell River in 5:33:12, while third place went to another woman, Suzanne Evans of New Westminster in 5:34:58.

The top Whistler runner was Michelle Kaminski, a veteran ultra runner who has now taken part in four out of five STORMY events. Kaminski was 18 th overall and fifth in the women’s under 40 category with a time of 6:35:21.

Other Sea to Sky solos taking part included Squamish runners Andrew Clarke in 6:24:56, Jody Parry in 6:24:56, Sean McCreanor in 6:50:38, Jim Bowers in 7:25:38, Imre Sorban in 7:44:20, Mike Kleso in 8:03:10 and Scott Paxton in 8:06:50.

In the relay category, Whistler’s A Physio With Patience was first among women and second overall with a combined time of 6:01:10. The team included Lisa Kallio, Marilyn Hellier and Catherine O’Neill.

Reel ’em In and Squamish Salmon Berries were second and third, representing Squamish with times of 6:02:47 and 7:12:11.

The top relay team was Kneeknackered with a time of 5:19:49, 10 minutes behind the top solo runner.
