Memorial scholarship created with CFOW

Wendy Thompson Scholarship Fund to support out-door recreation leaders

A new scholarship fund, created in memory of Wendy Ann Thompson, has been created with the Community Foundation of Whistler.

The fund was created from a donation by Shirley and Michael Thompson in memory of their daughter who passed away on Jan. 11, 1995 at the age of 33.

Wendy Thompson was a strongly outdoor-orientated young woman. She was a ski patroller as well as an active mountain biker and hiker. Also a paramedic, she passed away when a British Columbia Ambulance Service mercy flight crashed into the ocean at the north end of the Queen Charlotte Islands.

The Wendy Thompson Scholarship Fund will be open to students and Outdoor Leadership Program Leaders in School District No. 48. Those receiving a scholarship must show exemplary achievement and qualities and wish to further their education in the field of outdoor leadership. Bursaries are also awarded to students who show promise but who need financial assistance.

Since 2003, the Thompsons have provided annual scholarships, bursaries, and program funding to help students in the Sea to Sky Corridor participate in Outdoor Leadership Programs.

According to the Thompsons, the transfer of the memorial fund to a more formal setting will help to ensure continuity and good management over time.
