Whistler skiers will miss a familiar face in the early morning gondola lineups this winter. Dr. Davie Jones died Aug. 24 after a brief illness. He was 89.

A neurologist, Davie moved to Whistler in the early ’70s when he retired from practicing medicine and teaching at UBC.

He was an avid skier and hiker. Dressed in his red hat and blue one-piece suit with the Welsh dragon on the back, he always tried to be first in line to catch the fresh powder. A first run down Piccolo was his idea of heaven – followed, of course, by a Bass at the Dubh Linn Gate pub.

Davie was a great admirer of Dave Murray and participated in many of his camps. He led the Hippocratic Hippopotami team in the Peak to Valley race until he was 80, unfortunately not to victory.

A long time member of AWARE, Dr. Jones cared deeply about the environment and participated in many local green projects. Many well-worded letters were sent to various government departments.

No Whistler dog who crossed Davie’s path went unpetted. His many friends, both canine and human, will miss him on the ski slopes and on the trails.

He leaves behind his long-time partner Bridget Duckworth and many friends and students.

A pot-luck dinner honouring Davie will be held at his house on Saturday, Oct. 8, between 6 and 9 p.m.
