September is a busy month for Whistler rivers, as groups like the Habitat Improvement Team (HIT) and the Whistler Fisheries Stewardship Group take advantage of the last weeks of good weather to work on ongoing projects. Sunday, Sept. 25 is also B.C. Rivers Day, an event that was created to recognize the recreational, environmental and social benefits of our rivers and streams.
Tuesday, Sept. 20 – HIT will be doing a planting blitz along the River of Golden Dreams, getting as much vegetation into the site as possible before the sun goes down. Everyone is welcome to come out. Meet at 5:45 p.m. at Merlin’s to get a ride to the site, or head to the bottom of Lorimer Road for 6 p.m. A volunteer appreciation night will be held at Dusty’s at 7:45 p.m. for anyone who has taken part in a HIT project this summer.
Sunday, Sept. 25 – Whistler will celebrate the 9 th Annual B.C. Rivers Day at Lost Lake with free canoe rentals and lessons, displays of local invertebrates, fly-fishing demonstrations, and a barbecue (by donation). Everyone is welcome to come out and enjoy this event, which runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Tuesday, Sept. 27 – The Ministry of Environment and Whistler Fisheries Stewardship Group will be conducting an all-day Fitzsimmons Creek Bull Trout Spawning Angling Study, as researchers attempt to determine where the upper reaches of Bull Trout spawn. There will be moderate physical activity, but volunteers are welcome to help with the survey.
