Local reggae musician Kostas "Kostaman" Lymbertos is calling out to fellow musicians and music lovers to help launch a charity project that will go by the moniker "Bands Against Hunger."
The project will kick off at the Crystal Lounge’s weekly jam session this Sunday evening, which just so happens to be Kostaman’s birthday bash.
Activism and charity causes are synonymous with the musician, who has lent his sound to various Tsunami Fundraisers and the recent Power Of You gala event in Whistler to raise money for UNICEF’s efforts in Sudan’s Darfur region.
Sunday night’s open stage jam event will feature a Bands Against Hunger penny drive to help set the project in motion. Lymbertos says his intention is for local, regional and eventually international musicians and bands to "band together" and make a difference in the fight against poverty. A Bands Against Hunger website is currently in the works, he notes.
The Sunday night event will proceed with the characteristic openness and inclusiveness that has made Kostaman one of the most popular acts in town. The musician is encouraging everyone to bring instruments and is extending use of his own eclectic collection to those without. The evening will also feature karaoke courtesy of Steve Jiu – a local DJ and part owner of Whistler’s Farfalla salon – and dancehall beats by regular Kostaman collaborator DJ Phroh. The jam will kick off at approximately 8 p.m.
