Researched and written to safeguard Whistler’s natural areas, the draft version of the Protected Areas Network document is now ready for review online.
It is the culmination of roughly two years work and flows from the Whistler Environmental Strategy, which was adopted in 2002.
PAN was developed to protect Whistler’s important natural areas and their ecological connectivity. It also strives to ensure that future development and land use activities are located on the most suitable lands.
Among the sensitive ecosystems identified in PAN are: wetlands, riparian areas, alluvial forests and old growth and mature forests.
Three general levels of protection have also been developed, beginning with PAN 1 Preservation, PAN 2 Conservation and PAN 3 Ecosystem Management.
