After two years at other hills the Pontiac GMC Alpine Ski Championships will return to Whistler in March, with the top club, provincial, development and national racers competing for titles in all official disciplines. Whistler will also host the disabled ski championships featuring Canadian team prospects and Paralympians.
The event was announced on Wednesday at the Fairmont Waterfront in Vancouver by Alpine Canada Alpin President Ken Read and Emily Brydon, Kelly VanderBeek, Jeff Hume, Britt Janyk, Michael Janyk and Manuel Osborne-Paradis from the Canadian Alpine Ski Team, Daniel Wesley of the Canadian Disabled Alpine Ski Team and Robbie Dixon of the Canadian Alpine Development Team.
WORCA ‘club of the year’
With 1,000 members the Whistler Off-Road Cycling Association is the biggest mountain bike club in the world, and now WORCA is recognized by Cycling B.C. as the Mountain Bike Club of the Year. WORCA will be presented with the award on Nov. 3 at the annual Cycling B.C. awards in Vancouver.
Meanwhile the season is still going strong for WORCA. Today (Thursday, Oct. 27) WORCA is hosting a Halloween Loonie ride in Lost Lake Park. Sign-on is at the Lost Lake Warming Hut at 6 p.m. and the ride gets underway at 6:30 p.m. The after-party will be at the Riverside Café and the theme is pot luck, so all participants need to bring food. WORCA will be providing the refreshments.
Come dressed for the weather, and remember that for this Loonie the cash prizes go to the riders with the best costumes.
WORCA is also hosting an all-candidates meeting on Nov. 3 at Spruce Grove Elementary, starting at 6:30 p.m. All of the candidates for council and mayor are invited to take part. The format will be similar to the last WORCA event, where the public sits at tables and while the candidates make the rounds.
Minor hockey teams meet their match
After winning almost all their games in the first week of the regular season, the Whistler Minor Hockey Association faced some tougher competition this past weekend with games against Hollyburn, North Shore Winterclub, North Delta, and others. On the bright side the Midget C1 and Midget C2 teams and Atom C1 and C2 teams remain undefeated, while the Whistler Midget Girls team picked up their first wins against Port Coquitlam and Burnaby.
