Judith Wilson supports Layton on health care

The local NDP candidate added her voice to federal NDP leader Jack Layton’s healthcare defense this week.

In Regina on Wednesday Layton said his party will not allow federal money to go to private, for-profit health insurance.

Spreading the blame, Layton pointed fingers at the prime minister and opposition leader, as well as the premiers of Alberta, B.C. and Quebec, charging they are using a stealth campaign, leaving Canada’s health system open to profiteers.

Judith Wilson, NDP candidate for West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky, agrees.

“Jack Layton is right (when he says) medicare is gradually being eroded by people who claim to be protecting it,” she said in a press release.

Ms. Wilson reiterated four steps the NDP will take to defend public health care in the next Parliament, which include prohibiting federal funds transfers to subsidize operating or capital costs of a for-profit private health insurance system.

Ms. Wilson added that private health clinics should not receive federal funding for providing services covered by the medical services plan and that there are alternative ways to reduce waiting times than to build private clinics.

“We’ve spoken to experts who tell us there are lots of ways to handle how to streamline services that will change the length of wait times other than funding private clinics,” she said from her Sechelt office.
