Carols by Candlelight at Zurcher Park

Signal Hill Elementary combined choir set to brighten Christmas spirit

In last year’s hit Christmas movie, Elf , Will Farrell’s character Buddy the Elf suggests the best way to invoke Christmas Spirit is to sing a carol really loud.

Pemberton residents will get the chance to prove this theory on Wednesday, Dec. 21 with Carols by Candlelight at 7 p.m. at Zurcher Park. (Zurcher Park is located at the corner of Olive and Laurel streets in Vinyl Village.)

The outdoor carol sing-along will be led by close to 60 members of the Signal Hill Elementary school combined choirs: consisting of the primary Sparkle Choir, The Trouble Clef boys’ choir and the intermediate mixed choir, The Pembertunes.

The program includes both traditional and modern carols with an emphasis on familiar favourites. Song sheets will be available.

"The idea is that it’s going to be a community event. If you’re the kind of person who likes Christmas carols, but doesn’t necessarily go to church, this is a good chance to get out and enjoy them," said choir director Helen Pearson. "And with all the candles going at night it’s going to be really pretty."

Candles can be purchased onsite for $2, with funds going to offset the choir’s upcoming weekend workshop in January and transportation for choral trips in the New Year.

"For example, for the workshop we hire people to come in and teach the kids new things about singing, and that costs a little bit of money," said Pearson.

In the event of inhospitable weather, the event will take place in the lobby of the Pemberton Valley Lodge.

The Pemberton Rotary Club has sponsored the candles and song sheets for the evening concert.

Lillooet Lake Toy Drive extended

The drop date for toy donation for the 2 nd Annual Lillooet Lake Toy Drive has been extended to Thursday, Dec. 22. The toy drive is organized by paramedic Carrie Terchinetz to help brighten the Christmas of children living in the five First Nation reserve communities at the end of Lillooet Lake. Last year, more than 40 families benefited from the drive.

Gently used, clean, unwrapped toys can be dropped off at the Pemberton ambulance station across from Signal Hill Elementary school. Toys and gift items specifically for teens are in short supply.
