Fairmont Chateau Whistler chefs win gold

Stufano, Pernosky best in world

Two Whistler chefs helped Team Canada bring home gold at the Culinary World Masters Competition in Basel, Switzerland last month.

Vincent Stufano, Fairmont Chateau Executive Chef and Team Canada support member, and Ben Pernosky, Chateau Banquets Sous Chef, helped prepare 110 hot three-course meals aptly displaying authentic Canadian products. Their workmanship, professionalism and kitchen skills, together with their creativity convinced the judges that they are the best in the world.

And at the awards ceremony, Canada was awarded second place overall – a mere two points behind the winning team, Singapore.

The competition of the 10 international teams began with a cold display table of items consisting of buffet platters, finger foods, appetizers, main courses, desserts, petit fours, chocolate sculptures, cakes and pastries. Team Canada was awarded gold in this category.

And it’s not just the judges who are enjoying the outstanding food.

"We have seen noticeable changes in our banquet menus and customer feedback since (Pernosky) arrived," said Stufano. "Having award winning chefs in our kitchen not only helps service our customers better, but new chefs always like the opportunity to observe and practice with someone who has competition experience. So, Ben is very motivating for them."
