The Whistler Nordics Club is kicking off its weekly Loonie cross-country racing series tonight, Jan. 12, under the lights on the Lost Lake cross-country trails.

To participate you need to be a member of the Whistler Nordics ($25 and includes a membership in Cross Country B.C.) and the $2 entry fee.

To take part meet at the Lost Lake ticket booth at 5:30 p.m. The inaugural race, sponsored by the Riverside Café, will get underway at 6 p.m. sharp. The format will be announced at the start line.

The event is primarily a social evening for the club, but skiers looking for a workout won’t be disappointed.

Next week, the Jan. 19 Loonie event will be sponsored by the Rim Rock and Citta.

Winterhawks make Zone 5 hockey teams

The minor hockey season resumed last weekend and judging by the scores most Whistler teams made the most of the holiday break to recharge for the second half of the schedule.

Whistler teams won five games, tied two and lost two.

The Bantam Rep team, which had a 15-4-2 record in the first half, was bumped up a level from Tier 5 to Tier 4, and managed to tie their first game against the Vancouver T-Birds, and keep within one point in a loss to Langley.

Several Whistler athletes also tried out for their Zone 5 hockey teams, which will compete in the B.C. Winter Games in Trail this February. Nadine Crowe from the Midget Girls hockey team was selected to take part, as was the rep team’s Garrett Milan.
