Swim for Memories raises $2,000

Despite the late notice, local swimmers managed to raise almost $2,000 for the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada.

Brandi Higgins swam 10 km in three hours and eight minutes last Sunday, while her stepson helped to count 400 laps of the Meadow Park pool and kept time.

Paul Higgins swam 5 km in 1:45, the longest swim of his career, and with a case of the flu to slow him down. Marie-Anne Prevost also completed 5 km, her longest ever swim.

The swimmers would like to thank their sponsors at IGA, Marketplace Starbucks, Lululemon, Dynamic Core Fitnesss, Meadow Park Sports Centre and family and friends for helping them to reach their goal. They hope to make the fundraiser an annual event, but not necessarily a swim.

Freeride club goes provincial

Skiers from the Whistler Freeride Club headed to Rossland last weekend for the Red Resort Junior Freeride Contest, a big mountain-style competition where skiers are judged by how well they handle the terrain. One of the kids even launched a back flip 360 off a cliff.

From the Whistler Freeride Club, Shawn Clarke was seventh in the Boys 15-17 category, while Ariana Stufano and Erin Kerr were first and second in the Girls 15-17 group.

In the Boys 12-14 category, Ryan Sullivan was second, Jeff Gage tied for fourth, Alex Prochazka was sixth, Jordan Ling eighth and Curtis Gage 16 th .

The Whistler Freeride Club will host its own contest, the Whistler Junior Freeride Challenge, later this winter.
