Winter Classic raises $140K for local charities

More than 700 turn out

The 14 th annual Telus Winter Classic, a fundraiser for the Whistler Blackcomb Foundation, took place last weekend with a series of social events and the Triple Crown Classic on Blackcomb.

Through registration, the live auction, silent auction, and ticket sales, the Classic raised over $140,000 for the foundation, which provides funding to non-profit groups throughout the Sea to Sky corridor.

More than 700 people attended the Whistler Winetastic tasting event on Friday at the Westin Resort and Spa, with chef Hans Stierli pairing foods with wines from around the world. The winer of the instant wine cellar (wine rack, wine fridge, and 40 bottles of wine) was Sally Fontana.

The annual gala dinner and auction, which followed a "Vintage Vegas" theme was also a success with showgirls and dance performances from local talents. There was also a charity casino with blackjack, poker and roulette tables. Sandee Bathgate won the most play money, earning a weekend at the River Rock Casino in Richmond.

The Triple Crown Classic race attracted 47 teams, competing on a slalom course, snow bike course, and mogul course on or near the Pontiac Race Centre on Blackcomb.

The Whistler Blackcomb Foundation is now taking applications for funding, open to all Sea to Sky non-profit organizations. Applications are available online at ww1.whistlerblackcomb.com/wbfoundation/ or by calling 604-938-7321.
