Whistler Nordics Loonie goes pole-less

Whistler Nordics Loonie goes pole-less

Racers in the third Whistler Nordics Loonie Race of the season on Jan. 26 had another challenging week. All of the participants completed two laps of the course (5 km) before skiing another 1.5 km without the use of their poles.

Joanna Harrington took the women’s race in a time of 22:11, followed by Aurelie Germann in 23:15 and Sylvie Allen in 24:33.

Matt Bodkin and Dave Burch battled it out in the men’s division once again, with organizers giving the race to Bodkin in 19:32 by a tenth of a second over Burch. Florian Beliard was third in 19:59.

Bobby Bunbury was the top male youth race, while Aikiko Clarke won the women’s youth race once again.

Thanks to Chris Quinlan of Behind The Grind and Jackie from Whistler Chiropractic for sponsoring the race.

For tonight’s race (Feb. 2) the theme is Hawaiian and the format is a team relay. The event is sponsored by the Gibbons Hospitality Group, with an après at Tapley’s Pub.

Registration is at 5:30 p.m. and the race gets underway at 6 p.m. All participants must be members of the Whistler Nordics Club (membership available at sign-on) and have a valid night pass for the Lost Lake Cross Country Trails.

For more information on the series, or to sponsor a future Loonie race, contact organizer Carolyn Rodger at 604-932-5030.

Peak to Valley racers and volunteers needed

The organizers of the Appleton Rum Peak to Valley Race are still looking for a few backup skiers and volunteers for this weekend.

The Peak to Creek is the world’s longest giant slalom, with gates from the top of The Saddle to the base of Creekside. It typically sells out by the end of July each year, although teams are always looking for men and women at the last minute because of teammates pulling out.

To get on the alternates list, e-mail Terry Phillips in the Whistler-Blackcomb Events Department at tphillips@intrawest.com , or call 604-905-2034.

Organizers are looking for volunteers to help out on the event days. All volunteers will get an invite to the legendary after-party in the Roundhouse Lodge.

The Peak to Valley takes place on two days, with two members of each team of four racing on each day. Categories are set by the combined ages of team members, and there are awards for the fastest teams and individuals in each category.

Tickets are also still available to the awards dinner in the Roundhouse Lodge for non-racers. Contact the Events Department.
