Kuzma already warmed up

Vancouver songstress brings dance pop music to GayWhistler Ski Week

Who: Kim Kuzma

When: Thursday, Feb. 9, 8 p.m.

Where: Telus Conference Centre

Tickets: Advance $39, Door $44

Sizzling hot after concerts in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico earlier this week, Jet setter Kim Kuzma is ready to heat up Whistler’s winter with get-up-and-dance sets combining soaring pop vocals with electronica and a Latin edge Thursday, Feb. 9 at the Telus Conference Centre as part of GayWhistler Ski Week celebrations.

"My show will be upbeat and full of energy, but it will also have its romantic moments," said the West-Coast-Music-Award winner who reigned No. 1 on the HMV weekly independent artist charts for more than seven months.

The globe trotter definitely knows how to lay down dance tracks with hips that don’t stop shakin’, but her upbeat and daring sets also carry depth with honest and sometimes provocative songs that engage the listener – she credits the connection she makes with her audience as her greatest strength as a performer.

"I talk with the audience a lot between songs and I love to have fun with people," she said. "I like to take people on a bit of a journey with my music."

A journey filled with humour and heart.

Despite the demands of a tight-touring schedule, Kuzma still found time to volunteer at a Vancouver-area dump where families and children come for food and donations. She also co-produced a monthly fundraiser event called Just Singin’ Round at the Vancouver Rowing Club, resulting in receiving the 1999 Volunteer Spirit Award at the West Coast Music Awards.

She has a big heart and even more powerful voice.

The Province’s Tom Harrison raved about Kuzuma’s debut album, Contradictions : "She’s earned a reputation for the seemingly effortless soul she invests in her performances. With word of mouth on Contradictions , more people are discovering her musical range and depth as a writer."

Contradictions

was straight up singer-songwriter pop. However, Kuzma’s latest album, Who You Are , more accurately reflects her live stage charisma and electricity with dance/pop songs and bold club remixes, including a remix of Bagdad Café’s hit Calling You, The Beach Boys’ God Only Knows and Kuzma originals.

Hype, depth and a party jump-start, what’s not to love about the Vancouver beauty – the sports fan even sings the national anthem at Vancouver Canucks hockey games. You might have even heard her talents on the theme song for Warren Miller’s Go with the Windsurfer film.

Toast Kuzma at a cocktail reception at 8 p.m. with the concert opening at 9 p.m.

Tickets are $39/$44. Call 604-905-0510.
