Nostalgic take on punk

Nim Vind charges out movie-soundtrack-inspired notes at fast-forward speed for Punk Night

Who: Nim Vind

When: Sunday, Feb. 12

Where: Boot Pub

Nim Vind, frontman for his self-titled band, shares the same gripe as most other underground punk rockers – and while his distemper with both the state of the mainstream and standard punk music world is nothing new, Nim Vind’s backlash of theatric soundscapes charged with punk ferocity is.

"I kind of hate what is going on with music right now," Nim Vind said. "I think that is what every guy says, but I want to go down more of the lines of old school stuff: the old Johnny Cash, the old Misfits, not the new – The Damned – and mix it in that old crooner style singing with a movie-soundtrack flavour with punk speed and energy. Not just straight up standard punk, which is just as boring as radio rock."

The Vancouver punk rock band is bringing its nostalgic-stoked music to Punk Night Sunday, Feb. 12 at the Boot Pub.

Nim Vind’s heroes are musicians who poke holes in a speaker and crank it to create a jagged sound that despite having no lyrics was banned from the airwaves, or the urine-drinking antics of warped bands like Demented Are Go.

Whatever act of weirdness, Nim Vind is all about finding the unusual, even if that means breaking up a slamming set with a sit-down solo act of honky tonk meanderings just so fans can hear Nim Vind’s solid singing voice.

"I want to expose that most singers in bands don’t sing anymore. Most bands don’t craft their songs anymore," he said. "The emphasis is on production and how much you jump around. That’s fine for some, but I want to bring back the idea that the singer should be able to sing. Every song should have depth and style and creativity that makes you (think). Every song should be important."

Bringing the listener on a journey is also a driving force behind Nim Vind.

"I like to create atmosphere with each song," he said. "If you spend time with each song, you can create a roller coaster of emotions going through a whole spectrum of different songs. They all have that nostalgic flavour to it. Kind of like where have I heard or seen that before, like in a movie or something? That is what I am trying to do."

Nim Vind, signed to the German label FiendForce Records, has expanded its Western Canada and U.S. fan base to Europe with tours through Italy, Belgium, France, Germany, the Czech Republic and Netherlands, just to name a few countries. The group will depart once again for another European tour in March.

Lights Below and High Five Drive will join Nim Vind for Punk Night.
