One off the longest running events in Whistler history is the annual Cross-Country Loppet. Although last year’s Loppet was cancelled due to the lack of snow, the event returns this Sunday, Feb. 26, and organizers are expecting a strong turnout.
"We’re back," said Tom Barratt of the Whistler Nordics, which is hosting the event. "So far the conditions are really good, all the trails are open, and we’re looking forward to hosting a really great event."
For the adult age groups the race is 30 km long, or two laps of a 15 km route that starts and finishes at Nicklaus North Golf Club, and includes Old Mill Road, a section of Lost Lake Loop, Upper Fairway, Black Loop, more Lost Lake Loop, Lower Panorama and Hydro Cut.
There is also a recreational category that does one loop of the course.
The biggest group taking part are the Jackrabbits, with categories for kids of all ages. For kids seven and under there is a flat 4 km trail around the Nicklaus North Golf Course. Kids 8-13 go 6 km, and juniors 14-17 do the full 15 km route.
All categories get underway at 10:15 a.m. at the Nicklaus North Clubhouse, which is also hosting the awards at 1 p.m. Lunch will also be provided to participants, and additional lunches can be purchased for $15.
To take part you have to register by noon on Friday, Feb. 24. You can either sign up online at www.whistlernordics.com , or fill out a form at Wild Willies on Nesters Road.
