Raise a pint to Patty

Plenty of green fun all day for St. Patrick's Day

St. Patrick’s Day is traditionally a day dedicated to spiritual renewal, honouring the death of the patron saint of Ireland, St. Patrick, who was credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland in the late 4 th century.

However, what one person calls spiritual renewal is another beer swiller’s excuse to party with everything Irish – green, gold, shamrocks, leprechauns and luck – kicking up its heels Friday, March 17.

From following-day hangover breakfasts to live shows, Irish entertainment flows as richly as pints of Guinness at Black’s Pub.

Who: The Bowen Boys

Where: Dubh Linn Gate Old Irish Pub

What better way to toast a pint to the saint than at Whistler’s only Irish Pub, The Dubh Linn Gate. Live music from St. Patty’s Day veterans The Bowen Boys, with Rob Thompson on guitar, Cam Salay on Banjo and Moritz Behm on fiddle, will kick up a reel from 1 to 3 p.m., 4 to 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. The first Guinness is poured at 9 a.m., with a special Celtic menu served from 11 a.m. to midnight. Irish favourites to look out for include oysters, mussels, corned beef, lamb stew and traditional pies. Green gaiety extends to the next morning with the pub’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Hangover Breakfast starting as early as 7 a.m.

What: Shamrock Shenanigans

Where: Maxx Fish

Celebrate the Irish by keeping company with them. Ireland’s own Peter Vambeck (DJ Guggi) and local turntablist Mark Kritch (DJ Figo) will throw down a mix of house, breaks and electro. Don green and shine your boot buckles to win Best Irish costume with a pot-o-gold reward.

Who: Pickled Livers

Where: Merlin’s

With a name like Pickled Livers, you know this rowdy roster of local musicians knows how to party. Rob Funk, Kostaman, Gary Yoshida, Raj, Glen Mishaw, Greg Garland and Tiny Elvis – otherwise known as Andy Gallant, who is flying out from P.E.I. for the party – will pack in eight hours of golden dance tunes from 4 p.m. to midnight. Tickets are $10 after 6 p.m. (includes coat check) and $5 for Whistler Blackcomb employees.

Who: Guitar Doug

Where: Black’s Pub

The man, the hair, the legend. Doug strums tunes worth a toast of your pint from 11:30 a.m. to 1 a.m. Guinness kegs are well stocked and staff still uphold the seven-minute-pour tradition.

What: St. Patty’s Day Bash

Where: Moe Joe’s

Don’t forget to wear green to underground Irish festivities all night long. Canadian Snowmobile trip giveaway. Doors 8 p.m.
