The Israel-Palestine conflict is brought to light at the Whistler Film Festival’s next Reel Alternative Series film Paradise Now, screening Wednesday, March 29 at 7 and 9 p.m. at Village 8 Cinemas.
Hany Abu-Assad’s award-winning film follows the lives of two Palestinian childhood friends who are recruited as suicide bombers in Tel Aviv. Plans change after meeting a young woman at the Israeli border, and from the most unexpected place comes a bold new call for peace.
Paradise Now
was nominated for Best Foreign Language Motion Picture at the Academy Awards and won Best Foreign Film at the Golden Globes.Reel films to follow include Young: Heart of Gold April 12 and Transamerica April 26.
Tickets are $6.50 for Reel Alternative members and $8.50 for non-members.
Secret garden of talent
The Squamish Youth Theatre presents the annual YouthFest Friday, March 24 and Saturday, March 25 at 8 p.m. at the Eagle Eye Theatre in Squamish.
This year's show features six short plays, including the classic tale The Secret Garden, the tale of a young girl who restores a long-lost garden while at the same time reviving the love of a grief-stricken family.
Other short plays performed are The School For Princesses, a student's understanding of differences; Three Little Pigs, a spoof on the fairytale; The Apple, a satire about art and people; Sibling Switch, modern-day godmother tips; and Oh My Word! – a battle of words.
Producer Adriane Polo welcomes all ages to the evening of plays, and song and dance.

New-spirited movie series
Holistic Happenings in Whistler hosts Three Movies for Mind and Spirit March 26, April 2 and April 9 at the Whistler Youth Centre at MY Millennium Place.
The event seeks to better Whistler two ways: by introducing thought-provoking films exploring new-age nuances as well as raise funds for the youth centre.
The three films screened include Down the Rabbit Hole March 26, The Celestine Prophecy April 2, and The Indigo Evolution April 9.
There are two screenings of the Sunday night films: 6:15 and 8:15 p.m.
Tickets are $12 each or $30 for three-film package.

Express Yourself Sophie Brunet hosts a beginner’s acrylic and oil painting class Thursday, March 23 at Squamish’s Brennon Park Rec Centre.

Actors’ audition call
Between Shifts Theatre is hosting auditions Saturday, March 25 at 2 p.m. and Sunday, March 26 at noon at the Sea to Sky Hotel for their upcoming show.
Six short one-act works will be performed. Adults 16 years and older are invited to participate in the group audition.
