Club Shred presents a menagerie of art

Arts gala showcases film, photography and writing

What: Shred Arts Series Gala

When: Thursday, April 6, 8 p.m.

Where: MY Millennium Place

Tickets: $5/$3/Free

After a dismal snowfall last winter, Club Shred organizers brainstormed on ways to keep Whistler-Blackcomb staff motivated and loving life in Whistler.

Weather couldn’t be depended on but creative zeal could, and hence the Shred Arts Series Gala Show was born – a menagerie of short films, live music, photography and writing.

Even though this winter season has had plenty of powder for everyone to fill their days and hone in on the Whistler experience, the second annual gala moves ahead Thursday, April 6 at 8 p.m. at MY Millennium Place, building on Whistler’s yin and yang partnership of sports and culture.

"We wanted to do something that would round out their experience," said Andrew Zwicker, Club Shred coordinator.

"Last year was awesome. We were worried about how it would go over, but we packed out Merlin’s. We couldn’t fit any more in."

Organizers are stepping up the show a notch by partnering with LUNA to host the event at MY Millennium Place, to accommodate the anticipated crowds and increased artist showings.

More than a dozen filmmakers, photographers and writers will compete in the amateur contest with the public voting Best of Show in each category. There will also be live music from acoustic rocker Ben Russell and reggae punkers Dub Empire.

"It will be an intense art experience," Zwicker said. "Following Dub Empire, we’ll premiere this year’s entries in the film contest featuring everything from homemade ski and snowboard videos through to an awesome Reservoir-Dogs-style short film by local Chris Allen."

The first 75 people to arrive will receive a free Four ’n’ Twenty Pie and Monster energy drink.

Admission is $5 for the general public, $3 for LUNA members (ages 18-29) and free for Club Shred members.
