Big field expected for weekend motocross

Many pro riders expected as Green River club hosts provincial championship series event

This weekend is expected to produce the biggest event in the history of the fledgling Green River Riding Club as upwards of 250 riders, including about 20 professionals, compete in the second race of the six-part provincial championship series.

"We’re expecting about 1,000 people to come through the gate this weekend," said Shaun Greenaway. "We’ve doubled the size of the parking area and done a lot of track prep in the last week."

All categories will be racing this weekend, including novice, intermediate, expert, ladies, 50 cc, 65 cc and 85 cc classes.

"Typically we draw about 100 riders from the Lower Mainland for our events," Greenaway said, "but this weekend we’re expecting a lot from the Interior, northern B.C. and some from Washington state."

Among the riders expected will be Kyle Beaton, one of the top Canadian pro riders, Bradey Sheren, another top male rider, and Missy Hackett, whom Greenaway called "the fastest woman in B.C."

In anticipation of this weekend’s race the track was especially busy last weekend, with riders from the Lower Mainland getting in some practice time. Twenty-five loads of new material were put on the track the previous week and the riders were "ecstatic" about the shape it was in.

The Green River Riding Club is also hosting a fundraising evening at the GLC tonight (May 4), starting at 7 p.m. Vision Motorsports has donated a Yamaha TTR 50 bike, other companies have donated motocross gear and local hotels have chipped in with accommodation packages as prizes in a raffle this evening. It will cost $10 to get into the GLC and all proceeds from the evening will be reinvested in the track, which sits next to the Green River about 25 km north of Whistler.

This weekend’s schedule sees Saturday as a practice day and racing starting Sunday at 11 a.m. The Pemberton Lions Club will be handling the concessions this weekend.
