Squamish by-election attracts flurry of candidates

Seven throw their hats into ring

Seven candidates are contesting the Squamish by-election to fill the seat left vacant by the death of Ray Peters.

Peters, 60, passed away March 30 after a battle with cancer.

David Clarkson, Spencer Fitschen, Greg Gardner, Randy Lewis, Larry McLennan, Terrill Patterson and Ted Prior will be on the June 24 ballot.

Peters ran with Sutherland and three others as part of the New Directions slate in 2005. They were the only two to be elected in November’s election, down from four New Directions members elected in the previous election.

Patterson, a frequent candidate in Squamish elections, was runner-up to Sutherland in last fall’s race for mayor.

McLennan was seventh in voting for the six council seats last fall, finishing 27 votes short of Councillor Patricia Heintzman.
