Senior girls soccer team second in zone finals

Only team to score against tourney champs

Facing a collection of Zone 5 schools of similar size in the championships last week the Whistler Secondary senior girls came away with second place.

The first game was against Mount Currie, which Whistler won by a score of 3-1. They faced West Point Grey Academy in their second game, losing by a narrow 2-1, but rallied with a 2-1 win over Pender Harbour to place second overall in the Provincial A tournament.

The team MVPs were Charmaine Niewerth and Eleanor Messegeur, and goals were scored by Brynne Benbow, Emily Wright, Charmaine Niewerth, Nancy Bayly, Jenna Romanin and Tamara Kinney. Other players on the field included Makinna Coombs, Sam De Patie, Jenya Dudley, Jullian Duggan, Lauren Edwards, Kristi Hemingson, Tori Jenkins, Cele Jones-Smith, Rebecca Kinney, Lisa Laird, Riley McSkimming, Chantal Milan, Livvy Murray, Maddie Podborski and Shannon Robson.

The coaches were Bernard Messegeur, who also had a hand in the past successes of the boy’s senior team when his son was a player, and Dave Kinney. Mary Romanin helped to organize the trip to Gibsons.

Highlights for the team include:

• A compliment from West Point Grey coach and former Whitecaps player Steve McCauley that the Whistler team played with heart. Whistler was the only team to score against the tournament champions.

• Maddie Podborski coming off the bench despite a dislocated big toe to give the team a boost in their final game. Whistler was down 1-0 at that point, and rallied with Podborski on the field to score two unanswered goals.

• Top players Mia Daniels and Nadine Crowe were injured, but still came out to cheer on their teammates.

The zone finals tournament wrapped up the season for the team.
