WORCA seeks trail builders for IMBA course

As part of a program to ensure that Whistler always has a core of trained and experienced trail builders and maintainers, the Whistler Off Road Cycling Association will provide up to seven candidates with free entry to a four-day sustainable trail building workshop.

The workshops will be run by the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) from July 10 to 13, using universally adopted trail standards.

In exchange for taking the course, WORCA is asking candidates to donate 40 hours of volunteer time working with trail contractor Chris Markle. Markle is called the Trail Chef, and is credited with building Kill Me Thrill Me and Comfortably Numb, as well as extensive work on other trails like River Runs Through It.

If you’re interested in taking the course, contact WORCA trail director Boyd McTavish at trails@worca.com .

Comfortably Numb sold out

With three weeks to go the Comfortably Numb Trail Run is now completely sold out. Only 170 registrations were accepted for this year’s race, which covers approximately 25 km in total – almost 24 km of which is singletrack.

The field is largely female this year, with 106 women and 64 men taking part.

If you’re registered there will be an orientation run on Sunday, June 11. Meet at the Spruce Grove Field House at 9:30 a.m. if you need help arranging vehicles for the ride out to the Wedgemount parking lot. The run leaves from the parking lot at 10 a.m.

Government invests in Tobacco Free Sports

The provincial Ministry of Health announced $550,000 in funding over five years to coordinate a provincial Tobacco Free Sports program across the province with PacificSport.

Tobacco Free Sports is an international program recognized by the World Health Organization and the Canadian Centre for Disease Control. The goal of the funding is to underline the importance of proper health to sports by helping individuals and communities see the negative effects of tobacco use on health and decreased sport performance.

"Tobacco use continues to be the leading cause of preventable death and disease in B.C.," said Health Minister Jim Abbott. "We are building on British Columbia’s reputation as the healthiest province in Canada by providing funding through PacificSport to promote healthier lifestyles for all British Columbians. This partnership will help us to meet our ActNow B.C. goal of reducing tobacco use in B.C. by 10 per cent for 2010."
