Fishing for Father's Day

Once upon a time, long before skis had metal edges and mountains had chairlifts, Whistler was a fishing mecca. The original cabins on Alta Lake are the remains of a once busy fishing lodge that was accessible only by train.

While Whistler now offers every activity under the sun during the summer months, from glacier skiing to golf, fishing is still a major recreational activity in the region.

A lot of that fishing still takes place on Alta Lake, which is hosting the Sixth Annual Whistler Angling Club Alta Lake Fishing Event on Sunday, June 18 – Father’s Day.

There will be a fishing derby, a flycasting competition, a tackle swap and barbecue, with access to boats and all kinds of other gear. The fisheries department will also be releasing 1,000 cuthroat trout into the lake, a species which has thrived in recent years after the first test group was released almost five years ago.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for children, which includes the picnic, contests, and an opportunity to win draw prizes. Pre registration is available at Whistler Flyfishing at 117-4368 Main Street.

Day of event registration is from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Sunday morning, followed by fishing until 11 a.m. The picnic and casting competition will run from noon to 2 p.m.
