Behind the scenes of hip hop fame

Talent behind De La Soul albums, Gravediggaz and Handsome Boy Modeling School

The name Prince Paul may not be a familiar name among mainstream listeners, but being a former De La Soul producer and member of one of the most phenomenal groups in hip hop horrorcore history, Gravediggaz, the name might ring a bell Tuesday, June 27 at Moe Joe’s.

The original member of Stetasonic was the producer behind De La Soul’s highly successful debut album 3 Feet High and Rising. On this album, Prince Paul introduced his own invention called the hip hop skit, which has now become a long standing tradition for hip hop albums today.

After producing two more De La Soul albums, the Prince decided to go solo, resulting in a hip hop opera, A Prince Among Thieves, which featured Big Daddy Kane and Everlast.

Prince Paul’s dark sense of humour united with what became the supergroup of Gravediggaz, bringing together Prince Paul, Frukwan from Stetsasonic, Too Poetic from the Brothers Grym and RZA from the Wu-Tang Clan. The group is famed as one of the most influential groups in hip-hop horrorcore. Their abrasive, menacing soundscapes are legendary, most notably on their debut album 6 Feet Deep. Prince Paul played a smaller role on the production side of the Gravediggaz’s second album, The Pick, the Sickle and the Shovel, moving onto different projects, including teaming up with Dan the Automator to form Handsome Boy Modeling School.

The group featured prominent hip hop names on various albums, including Sean Lennon and Del The Funky Homosapien on So… How’s Your Girl as well as RZA, Linkin Park, Tim Meadows and John Oates on White People.

More collective albums followed including the Politics of the Business and Itstrumental as well as producing efforts such as The Art of Picking Up Women.
