Sea 2 Summit Adventure Race returns with new format

Race now has one and two-day courses, more Whistler focus

The Sea 2 Summit Adventure Race series turns 11 this year, and organizers are celebrating the start of their second decade by creating some different categories and changing the course.

The race typically starts in the Squamish area with a kayak up Howe Sound, but this year’s event will get underway in Pemberton on Saturday, Sept. 9. The first stage is a 23 km paddle through Pemberton Meadows, stage two is a 45 km mountain bike ride, and stage three is a basic navigation trek and trail run. For individuals and groups looking to get into adventure racing, or just to see what the sport is all about, it’s a manageable distance.

Teams and solos who elect to compete in the more traditional two-day event will start Sunday about seven kilometres south of Whistler with a 35 km mountain bike leg, followed by a 14 km paddle on lakes and rivers, followed by a final trek with some basic navigation.

As always there will also be a few surprise challenges for racers. Racers have to be self-sufficient on both days, and carry their own food, water, and spare clothing. There will be first aid stations, but no water stations.

People can compete as solos, pairs and teams of four. Teams can be all male, all female or co-ed.

For more information and registration visit www.sea2summit.com. The cost is $260 for all solos and teams in the two-day race, and $145 for the one-day event, which includes a shirt, a chance to win draw prizes from event sponsors and tickets to the post-race feast on Saturday night at the Whistler Brew House.
