For alternative film fans who visited LUNAFliks every Thursday this summer, don’t despair. Whistler’s outdoor film sessions might be done for the season, but Reel Alternatives returns this fall for its third season of bringing top indie films to Whistler.

“The idea with the series is that if we don’t bring these indie films here, they won’t make it to Whistler,” said Shauna Hardy Mishaw, executive director of the Whistler Film Festival Society. “The event also helps build an appetite for indie film in Whistler. This fall is a lead up to the (Whistler Film Festival) three months away. We are trying to get people excited about the films that are out there and what is to come and what to look forward to at the festival.”

The Whistler Film Festival Society in partnership with Village 8 Cinemas presents the Reel Alternatives Independent Fall Film Series. Since 2004, the film society has screened indie films, including partnering with LUNA for the LUNAFliks summer screening series. In the lead up to the 6 th annual Whistler Film Festival Nov. 30 to Dec. 3, Reel Alternatives screens a film every second Wednesday, starting Wednesday, Sept. 13 at Village 8 Cinemas.

A total of five films will be shown over the fall season, including Prairie Home Companion Sept. 13, A Scanner Darkly Sept. 27, The Journals of Knud Rasmussen Oct. 11, The Road to Guantanamo Oct. 25 and Half Nelson Nov. 8.

Each film is screened twice, at 7 and 9:15 p.m. Anyone who was a regular to last year’s screenings knows to pick up tickets early because many shows sell out.

Join the Reel Alternatives indie film club to save money. The membership is $4 and provides members with a $2 discount on each screening as well as discounts at Three Below.

Regular tickets are $8.50.

“It’s a great chance to hangout with people interested in film,” Hardy Mishaw said. “It’s also amazing entertainment value that is affordable.”

Tickets and memberships are available in advance and on show day at Village 8 Cinemas and Nesters Market.
