Labour Day weekend busy for Pemberton officers

2,000 vehicles road checked

Alcohol also played a factor in a serious single-vehicle accident on Lillooet Lake Road. A pickup truck, carrying five passengers in the box and another two in the cab, went off the road at approximately 5 a.m. Monday. RCMP and ambulance responded to find that five of the occupants had been ejected. Several of the passengers were taken to hospital for the treatment of non-life threatening injuries. One victim was air-lifted to Vancouver General Hospital. The diver, a Mt. Currie resident, faces numerous charges under the Motor Vehicle Act including undue care and attention, driving contrary to restrictions, passenger not seated properly and failure to display the “N” associated with being a new driver.

In an unrelated matter, a Pemberton male adult driver was suspended from driving after an officer noticed signs that he was under the influence of cocaine. The subsequent investigation led to his arrest for possession of cocaine. The man’s name has not been released at this time.

Drug charges are also pending against two adults associated with a property in the 9300 block of Portage Road. Police seized what they describe as “50 large marijuana plants” from the Birken residence. The seizure came as the result of an anonymous tip. The investigation is ongoing. The potential charge facing the duo would be production and cultivation of marijuana.

Mounties and Conservation Officers joined forces in a seizure of another kind. Acting on a tip from the public, the two enforcement agencies seized two unregistered firearms and ammunition from a Burnaby man camping on Meagher Forest Road. Charges are pending further investigation.

Conservation Officers and Pemberton RCMP conducted a road check on Monday near One Mile Lake to check for illegal hunting and fishing. Over a six-and-a-half-hour period more than 2,000 cars were checked. Twenty-five Motor Vehicle Act charges, eight Wildlife Act charges and one Liquor Act charge were laid. Additionally, two conservation investigations were opened, one for illegal deer hunting and another in relation to grouse hunting. One Criminal Code charge was laid in relation to the illegal transportation of a handgun.
