Sample award-winning barbecue, dance up a
storm to Zeppelin and win great prizes at BBQ Bob’s Redneck Bash on Monday,
Sept. 18 at 6 p.m. at Merlin’s. Proceeds from the event will help a local
barbecue team compete in two of the most respected barbecue competitions in the
world.
“These are both
long ways to travel with all of our BBQ gear,” said barbecue competitor Bob Haselbach.
“Competitive BBQ is allready an expensive thing to be into. When we have the
extra expenses involved with traveling this far, it is more challenging.”
Haselbach with his reigning B.C. Barbecue Champion Eh Team of Mark
Smith and Dave Brownsberger will compete at the American Royal Barbecue
competition in Kansas City and the Jack Daniel’s World Championships in
Lynchburg, Tennessee.
However, the team needs to raise $8,000 to help cover expenses.
Packing up a competitive barbecue smoker, tent and kitchenware doesn’t exactly
fall under the airplane carry-on category.
So break out your best plaid and trucker hats to support the local
redneck fundraiser, with Whistler’s favourite Zeppelin tribute band A Whole
Lotta Led leading the way.
Haselbach’s pork butt, which garnered top honours at the Canadian
BBQ Championships, headlines the buffet.
Admission includes entry into a raffle with more than $5,000 worth
of prizes to be given away.
The top prize
is a barbecue starter kit, which includes a competitive barbecue, Haselbach’s
secret rubs, charcoals, meats and a 24-hour barbecue tutorial.
“I’ll teach
them how to do it, so they can enter the Canadians next year if they want,”
Haselbach said.
Tickets are $50 and include the live concert, buffet, raffle entry
and two beers. There will also be prizes for the top three redneck costumes.

Get strumming
Learning to play an instrument can often be
intimidating. However, Chicks with Picks leader and founder Sue Stearns makes
it easier by hosting collective guitar classes in a supportive women-only
environment.
The Pemberton gal, best known about these parts as the frontwoman
for Still Smokin’, teaches two classes every Wednesday night from Sept. 20 to
Oct. 25 and Nov. 1 to Dec. 6 at the Pemberton Community Centre. The beginner
class starts at 6 p.m. and intermediates at 7:30 p.m.
The classes are song oriented with instruction moving quickly
through basic chords to easy songs to play and sing. Stearns invites students
to bring their own music suggestions and also exposes students to different
types of guitars and amplifiers to demonstrate different styles and sounds.
More than 125 women have attended her classes over the past three
years with more and more Whistler pickers attending classes.
