Reel Inuit journey

Toronto film fest darling screened in Whistler

Gain insight into the first contact between European explorers and the Inuit from an Inuit perspective in Zacharias Kunuk’s The Journals of Knud Rasmussen Wednesday, Oct. 11 at 7 and 9:30 p.m. at Village 8 Cinemas.

The Journals is the next film in the Reel Alternatives Independent Fall Film Series presented by the Whistler Film Festival and Village 8 Cinemas.

The film, which opened this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, is more than just a work of art, it’s a cultural and historical event as it follows the life of aging shaman Avva and his favoured, yet rebellious daughter Apak. Tensions within the family and the community arise when Danish explorers intrude.

The intimate family drama looks at how these two cultures collide as Avva is forced to explain his traditional beliefs and confront the reality of his home village being completely converted to Christianity.

After The Journals , only two more Reel Alternatives films will screen before the Whistler Film Festival kicks off Nov. 30. The Road to Guantanamo , winner of the Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival, screens Oct. 25 and Half Nelson , a must see, screens Nov. 8.

Tickets are $8.50 and $6.50 for Reel Alternative members. Membership is $4.
