The sound of the rain, a beat of a heart, the step of a foot: life orchestrates its own music and rhythm.
Percussionists Bruno Roy and Janic Gingras have listened closely to this living orchestra and as a result the duo was inspired to create their own, drawing on everyday sounds and objects to transform the everyday into a vivacious performance for young and old.
Follow the history of percussion, spanning everything from the Brazilian samba to new-age hip hop, in Rhythm and Stomp, Saturday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. at MY Millennium Place, part of the 2006-07 Performance Series.
“These performers know how to get the crowd energized,” said Doti Niedermayer, Whistler Arts Council executive director. “Kids love the instruments, and the music seems to have come from every corner of the globe.”
The fast-paced, humour-filled concert explores the vast world of rhythm, traveling through the musical landscapes of the Middle East, Europe, Africa and the Americas.
The duo will capture children’s imaginations with tales of far off places brought to life through unique instruments, including the kalungu, djembe, debouka and apito.

The next Performance Series event of the season is International Guitar Night, Nov. 1 at MY Place. The forum welcomes the world’s most original guitar players/composers to awaken audiences to the diversity of guitar styles and techniques.

Rhythm and Stomp tickets are $10 for children 12 and under, $13 for students/seniors and $13 for adults. Whistler Arts Council members pay $13. Council membership is $25.
