Cake, music, snacks and beverages will be the order of the day
for Whistler Community Services Society’s 15
th
anniversary, to be
celebrated Saturday, Oct. 14 at the Re-Use-It centre in Function Junction.
Established in 1989 as an after-school care facility with one
volunteer staff, the umbrella group for over two-dozen programs has grown to
include 22 full- and part-time staff.
The society’s executive director, Janet McDonald, has been with
the organization for 10 years. In addition to offering current programs like
counseling assistance and youth outreach and the employment and Re-Use-It
centre, McDonald hopes the society will continue to grow. The wish list
includes a commercial greenhouse and a one-stop multi-user facility similar in
concept to the YMCA. Currently the society is going ahead with plans for a
construction materials re-use-it centre, to be located adjacent the new waste
transfer station about 12 kilometers south of Function Junction.
But on Saturday there will be music provided by locals Don Murray and Sue Sterns, as well as a cake baked by Gillian Tiffin. Celebrations run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
