The Mount Currie First Nation is on a health kick, and is
looking for some new kickers to help out.
To gear up band members to participate in the new fitness
program, which will be run by Whistler trainer Cat Smiley, Mount Currie is
holding an athletic shoe drive. New and used shoes in good condition are
welcome.
The program is mainly aimed at improving the health and fitness
of young women and their parents, and will include segments on nutrition,
motivation, personalized coaching and self-improvement opportunities. That
program got underway on Oct. 25.
Smiley, who runs the Boot Camp fitness program, will also talk
to students at Xit’olacw Community School about setting goals and
self-motivation.
“Cat’s visit to the school will facilitate the Recreation
Department’s vision that encourages young people in the area to increase their
motivation to exercise and promote healthy living,” said Daniel Cindric, recreation
director for Mount Currie.
All of the athletic shoes collected will be sold to program
participants for $5 with the proceeds going towards the Boot Camp recruit that
makes the most improvement over four weeks. The Boot Camp testing program is 85
per cent fitness (Navy standard), 10 per cent body composition and five per
cent attendance.
Cindric and Smiley are looking for establishments in the corridor that are willing to collect shoe donations. If you can host a drop box, contact Daniel Cindric at 604-935-4840, 604-894-6131 or daniel_cindric@lilwatnation.com .
