Last twoonie race

Last twoonie race tonight

While Whistler has the snow base to keep the cross-country season going a long time yet, providing the weather co-operates, the Whistler Nordics twoonie race season wraps up tonight, Thursday, March 1.

Snowcovers will sponsor this event, with 5:30 p.m. registration and a 6:15 p.m. start at the Lost Lake ticket booth. Bring your headlamps, as the course goes off the lighted section of track.

McKeever breaks cross-country boundaries

Canadian cross-country skier Brian McKeever has always competed with fully-abled athletes, but at the international level his achievements have been in the Paralympics.

McKeever was an up and coming junior racer on the national team when he was diagnosed with a degenerative eye disease that left him with just 10 per cent of his normal vision. For years he has been at the top of the visually impaired rankings, with his brother Robin acting as his guide. From the beginning of his Paralympic career, Brian insisted he could see and feel the track well enough and only used a guide because it was required by the International Paralympic Committee.

This year he has embarked on a program that would see him represent Canada in both the Olympics and Paralympics, the first athlete to do so. So far he’s off to a good start, placing 39 th in the men’s pursuit at the Nordic Skiing World Championships in Sapporo, Japan this past weekend. He was the third Canadian, behind George Grey in 25 th place and Dan Roycroft in 37 th position.

To put that into perspective, there were 92 athletes at the start line, all qualifying on the World Cup circuit.

In fully able-bodied Nor Am Cup events in Canmore, he finished second in pursuit, fourth in classic, and 14 th in sprint.

Every Woman in the World returns for June
