Canadian skiers head back to Whistler for championships

Best results yet

By Andrew Mitchell

With the Canadian Alpine Ski Team logging its best international results in team history — 43 top-10 World Cup results as of this week, and 13 podiums — all eyes will be on Whistler from March 20 to 28 as the resort again hosts the Pontiac GMC Canadian Championships.

Members of the national team, development team, provincial teams, and clubs across Canada will face off in downhill, super G, super combined, giant slalom and slalom events, using mostly the same courses that will be used in the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. More than $40,000 will be up for grabs.

There will also be a team dual slalom event Saturday, March 24 on Lower Olympic, finishing in the village. B.C., Alberta, Ontario and Quebec will go head-to-head for provincial bragging rights, starting at 4 p.m.

Spectators are welcome at events on Whistler Mountain, and there will be awards after every competition. There will be a live feed out of Creekside at about 3 p.m. each day as well as a formal presentation in Whistler Village later in the afternoon.
