Backcountry Advisory

As of Wednesday, May 2

Alpine: MODERATE expect natural avalanche activity with sun exposure

Treeline: MODERATE

Below Treeline: LOW

Travel Advisory: Moist new snow is accumulating at treeline and in the alpine. Cornices have been triggering numerous stiff slab avalanches to size two, with natural loose wet avalanches running from very steep terrain below treeline.

Avalanche Activity: Ten centimetre to 1/2 metre slab avalanches have been observed from lee start zones, especially at corniced features. The moist new snow and mild temperatures will stress cornices, with the sunshine on the weekend continuing the process.

Snowpack: A dense layer of about 50 centimetres is sitting over hard crusts and an otherwise well settled snowpack. New moist snow is being loaded onto alpine and treeline areas, with overnight cooling expected on Thursday night and clear cooler conditions forecast through the weekend.

Weather: An upper trough will bring precipitation through Thursday with clearing expected from Friday through the weekend, and another system expected early next week.
