Bike Park to open May 19

No soft opening this year

By Andrew Mitchell

There won’t be a soft opening of the Whistler Mountain Bike Park this year, as a result of gondola repairs, but Whistler-Blackcomb officials plan to have the lower park up and running daily by the official opening date of May 19.

According to bike park manager Tom Prochazka, the priority for trail crews will be finishing the Crank It Up trail, reviving some of the older trails with bridging, and building new singletrack in both the lower park and Garbanzo area. Since work crews are constrained by issues like the snow pack and fire hazard ratings in the summer, he could not say what trails will be worked on or give completion dates.

“Crank It Up is our big project, and we’ve got lots of maintenance planned and some new singletrack options and things like that, but we can’t be that specific until our guys get out there,” he said.

“One thing we want to do is add a bit more woodwork. We have a lot of older trails that need some attention, and in some places woodwork is a good way to do it.”

Pass prices are up this year to $359 until May 31, and will be $399 after June 1. Winter Season Pass and Edge Card holders can get passes for $349 at any time.

This year the bike park is offering a Triple Play Card that includes three days of riding and discounts for additional days, which works like the edge card. The price is $109 for adults, $96 for seniors over 65 and youth 13 to 18, and $54 for children 10 to 12. Daily rates for cardholders will be $35 for adults, $32 for seniors and youth and $18 for children. Extended Play passes will once again be available once the mountain extends its hours.
