Whistler’s sixth annual Enviro Fest is set to go Saturday, June 9, with a full day of free activities and performances for everyone to enjoy, and an expo by Whistler’s environmental community.

Enviro Fest gets underway at 10 a.m. with the second annual Wild Things scavenger hunt at Rebagliati Park, hosted by Cara Richard of the Whistler Naturalists. Parents and children will be given a checklist of species to find and bring back before the hour is up.

The expo runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Mountain Square, with the theme Sustainability in Action. The expo gives local groups a chance to show off their activities and campaigns. Presenters include the Association of Whistler Area Residents for the Environment (AWARE), Whistler Naturalists, Whistler Fisheries Stewardship Group, Whistler2020, the Resort Municipality of Whistler, Whistler-Blackcomb, and several others. The theme for this year is Sustainability in Action, with local community organizations and the municipality showcasing their activities.

Other all-day activities include face-painting and children’s activities taking place aboard a Whistler and Valley Express bus, and live cooking demonstrations by Slow Food Whistler and Farm Folk/City Folk. The presentations will pair local chefs with local food producers, educating the public about the environmental, social, health, and taste benefits of eating locally produced foods.

There will also be a show of art and environmental messages produced by students at Alta Lake School and Spring Creek School, which the public can vote on.

The first musical performance is by Vancouver’s Quest Poetics, presented by Hilltrip, which gets underway at 11:30 a.m. The second performance features Whistler’s Kostaman Band, presented by the Bands Against Hunger Society.

Between bands at 1 p.m., AWARE will present its second annual Environmental Business Awards, recognizing small, medium and large businesses for their environmental activities and contributions to sustainability.
