The Whistler Racquet Club hosted a Tennis B.C. Challenger event this past weekend, drawing the top young tennis players from across the Lower Mainland for a two-day singles and doubles tournament.

Members of the club’s junior development team more than held their own, as Whistler’s John Chan defeated provincial first seed Brian McKnight in the semi-finals and went on to win the Boys 14 and Under category. It was Chan’s first tournament.

Whistler’s Emina Ida made it to the semi-finals but lost to Stacy Fung of the Lower Mainland. Fung went on to win the Girls Under 12 category.

The rain forced the tournament indoors, but tournament director Kirk Paterson managed to get all the main draw singles and doubles games underway indoors, and a few of the playoff rounds outside on Sunday.

The next youth tournament at the club, the Rix Rookie Tournament, is this Sunday, June 17.
