Whistler to hire Olympic officer

Communications and community engagement officer to drive community support and raise awareness of opportunities

By Clare Ogilvie

The Resort Municipality of Whistler is looking to hire a manager of communications and community engagement for its 2010 office.

The successful applicant will be based in Whistler, said the municipality’s information officer Diana Waltmann.

“But we are advertising in the Lower Mainland too,” she said.

The deadline for submissions is June 22 with a potential start date of July 1. The position will run from this summer until April 30, 2010.

The position was outlined as an objective in the municipality’s strategic framework, said Waltmann and is key to getting people on board to help make the 2010 Winter Olympic and Parlaympic Games a success.

Top of the list of tasks will be to engage the community in the opportunities the Games present and also to get people on board to volunteer.

The new management position will also assist the Whistler Chamber of Commerce to execute a service strategy designed to produce a “service culture” throughout all of Whistler.

While salaries are currently under review it’s likely the management position will offer a salary of between $67,000 and $84,000. The final compensation offered will also be based upon experience.

The Whistler 2010 office will give its next update to council at the July 16 meeting and will start its quarterly reporting later this year, once the operational plans are complete.
