For the record

In last week’s story on the assaulted hockey player, Constable Afzeel Yakub was quoted as saying: “We get a lot of fights on Friday and Saturday that are not people breaking the law, they are just people being rowdy. But Monday night’s incident clearly goes beyond that line.” In fact, fights do constitute breaking the law. However, because people are often intoxicated, they are not in a position to give a statement and the RCMP cannot arrest them for assault. Instead, they are arrested for intoxication in a public place and held in cells overnight.
