How many chances do dog owners get to take their pooches out for dinner?

The Whistler Animals Galore (WAG) animal shelter hosts their biggest fundraiser of the year serving a buffet dinner for their two legged friends and a three-course dinner for their four legged friends — which of course includes a doggie bag.

“You can expect some singing from the dogs at one point in the evening,” said shelter manager Joanne Russell, laughing. “There will be great food for the canines and humans, great prizes and of course great company.”

Bring your “yappetite” to the evening of dinner, live music and auction at the K9 Wine and Dine on Saturday, Aug. 18 at the Hilton Resort.

Kostaman and The Vibrations will get everyone dancing, The Oracle will host paw and palm readings, Penny Martyn from Garlick Mountain Ceramic and Tile will facilitate paw imprints, Snap Whistler will photograph pet portraits, and a silent and live auction will feature amazing items, including a bed and breakfast with a whale watching package at Friday Harbour.

“It’s our biggest fundraiser of the year,” Russell said.

This year, the Resort Municipality of Whistler reduced funding to the no-kill animal shelter, so public support is needed more than ever.

The evening will also include a slide show of WAG rescues.

“It will be a slide show of animals helped by previous Wine and Dine fundraisers,” Russell said. “We will see them in their new homes. How they recovered from illness and injuries. There will be before and after pictures. The show will help people see how their money helps WAG be successful.”

Tickets are $45 for owners and $20 for canines.

Striking gold in Britannia

Go panning for gold at the B.C. Museum of Mining’s signature event Copper and Fire, a showcase celebrating mining and the arts Sunday, Aug. 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at museum grounds at Britannia Beach.

“This year we have many new artists and craft people doing hands-on demonstrations (giving) a rare insight into how their art is created,” said co-organizer Adriane Polo. “Centre stage provides a festive homegrown musical talent while people can stroll around and meet artists and enjoy the museum tour.”

This year celebrates with the opening of the museum’s launch of the Metamorphosis Evolution exhibit. The showcase, curated by Krisztina Egyed, features local, national and international artists who have conjured mined materials into art.

In addition to the exhibit, Copper and Fire guests can also get active in demonstrations of art that require fire or metal construction.

Discover the many shapes earth treasures can take with interactive art displays featuring bronze casting, silver jewelry making, copper wire sculpting, black smithing, stained glass production, glass shaping and live pottery demonstrations.

In addition to browsing artwork inspired by mining and mined materials, guests can also take guided tours of the Britannia Mine, pan for gold with world champion gold panner Yukon Dan, and partake in live music, barbecue and children’s art activities.
