Time trial championships Saturday

Road cyclists face the race of truth Saturday in Squamish.

The B.C. Time Trial Championships, hosted by Team Escape Velocity, take place Aug. 11 on a 38.5 km course along the mostly flat Squamish Valley Road.

“We expect to see some of the top cyclists in British Columbia at this event,” said Rich Woo, race co-organizer for Team Escape Velocity. “The top competitors will average speeds near 50 km/h on this exciting course.”

Riders leave the start at intervals, and are not allowed to draft if they catch other riders on course. The goal is to ride as fast and as consistently as you can from start to finish, as you are racing the clock instead of other riders.

This year the race is part of the B.C. Cup series, and points will be awarded to the top riders that will go towards the overall B.C. Cup rankings for 2007.

The start and finish is at the junction of Squamish Valley Road and Paradise Valley Road, with sign-on starting at 5:30 a.m. The first riders leave at 9:15 a.m.

There are Senior, Junior, Under 17 and Under 15 categories for men and women, as well as a category for hand cyclists.
