Remember joys of camping as a child? There was the excitement of setting up your first tent, lighting a fire, and then falling asleep — your stomach full of Campbell soup — under a starry sky.
Those in the community who would like to give girls aged 5 to 17 an opportunity to participate in this type of positive experience should consider volunteering for the local Girl Guides unit.
According to program coordinator Melissa Deally, the Whistler Girl Guides unit has grown considerably in the past few years, and more volunteers are needed to run the program and ensure an adequate ratio of adults to children.
“This year we kind of got by. But we’re hoping to do more than just get by, you know. We’re hoping to run the program really well,” said Deally.
“If we have more people, we can run wonderful programs for the children without it being too time consuming and overwhelming for the adults,” she said.
In particular, the Girl Guides are looking for local women to be Guiders for the Brownie and Guide groups, as well as volunteers for the administrative positions of Secretary, Treasurer, and Co-Commissioner. All positions are flexible.
“We have a lot of fun as adults working together and just meeting adults that we wouldn’t have necessarily met within this community, as it has grown to such a large point. Through our common interests, we’ve made some great friendships,” said Deally.
Deally added that the Girl Guides program does not want to have to turn girls away because of a lack of volunteers.
“We want to be able to accept every girl in the community that is interested in joining,” she said.
The Whistler Girl Guides unit meets every Thursdays at 6 p.m. at Spring Creek Elementary School, September to May. Women interested in volunteering should call Deally at 604-938-9571.
