The Whistler Women’s Hockey League is looking for a minimum of 20 players to round out their rosters this winter, and are hosting a draft on Thursday, Sept. 13. The draft system lets the last place team from the 2006-07 season have the first two picks for the 2007-08 season, and so on until all the rosters are filled.

At the minimum, players trying out should be able to skate and stop, and should have a basic understanding of the game — and a willingness to attend beginner’s clinics and drop-in games to improve.

If you would like to play this year, contact league coordinator Christine Kenny at chrisk27@hotmail.com or 604-935-3145 to pre-register for the draft. The draft will run from 8:15 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., and prospective players should come wearing full gear, and be ready to do drills and participate in a scrimmage.

If you cannot make the draft but are still interested in playing this year, you should contact Christine Kenny and provide her with your contact information.

Strut Your Stuff Saturday

Once again local sports and recreation organizations have made registration easy for parents at Strut Your Stuff, the community’s one-stop registration fair.

Groups attending include Whistler Minor Hockey, Whistler Skating Club, Whistler Gymnastics, the Whistler Mountain Ski Club, various Whistler-Blackcomb programs, Soul Funktion Dance Studio, youth tennis, the Whistler Children’s Choir, Boy Scouts, Girl Guides, Whistler Kishindo, and several other programs.

Strut Your Stuff runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Myrtle Philip Community Centre. Both hockey and figure skating will also be hosting heir equipment exchange during the fair.

Parents on a budget will also be able to pick up applications for Kidsport funding to help defray the cost of registration and equipment, as well as learn about the new Children’s Fitness Tax Credit available for recognized athletic programs.

The Girl Guides are asking that any “gently used” uniforms, books or other Guides materials be brought to Strut Your Stuff so that they may be used again.
