Pass prices at the Meadow Park Sports Centre may have been raised recently, but on Friday it will be cheaper than ever to use the centre’s facilities.
Starting Friday, Oct. 5, Meadow Park will be offering Friday Twoonie nights. Admission is just $2 after 6 p.m., which includes access to the pool, weight room and public skating. Skate rentals will also be just $2.
“We went to council in July to ask permission to have our fees raised for the first time in seven years, but in return we put several affordability measures on the table,” said Roger Weetman, recreation coordinator for the Resort Municipality of Whistler.
Weetman was a member of the Whistler 2020 Health and Social Sustainability task force, which also includes a task force on resident affordability.
In addition to $2 Twoonie nights, the centre is also offering free Meadow Park passes to Whistler students in Grade 5 and Grade 10. Those are key years for keeping kids active according to the province’s Active Communities program.
Most students in those age groups are already in Meadow Park’s database, and will be receiving notice of their passes. Students not in the database will be given a letter to take home and have signed by a parent or guardian.
The Grade 5/Grade 10 program is also being launched this week to coincide with the reopening of the pool after being closed for annual maintenance.
