Halloween Loonie draws a crowd

Whether it was the clear skies, handy start, or the promise of a full moon, the Whistler Off-Road Cycling Association (WORCA) drew a record number of riders to the Lost Lake trails on Thursday, Oct. 25 for the third annual Halloween Loonie ride.

Whether it was the clear skies, handy start, or the promise of a full moon, the Whistler Off-Road Cycling Association (WORCA) drew a record number of riders to the Lost Lake trails on Thursday, Oct. 25 for the third annual Halloween Loonie ride.

You needed a headlamp to take part, and the route was marked with reflective arrows and pumpkins. This year more than 100 people joined the ride, or well over double last year’s total.

The race started and finished at Spruce Grove Field House, with several riders electing to make two laps of the course.

There were no winners in the Halloween Loonie, but free memberships for the 2008 season were given to the male and female with the best costumes.

On the male side, Francis Chaisson was picked as the winner in Viking outfit, and the fact that he had his own built-in sound system playing scary music. On the women’s side, the votes went to Lena Martin, who came dressed as a shark eating a scuba diver.

The Halloween Loonie was the last event of the season for WORCA, and brought the total number of Loonie riders to over 5,000 in 22 events, or an average of 227 riders per race.
